Minister Dr Diane Gashumba/Rwanda Ministry of Health
The Minister of Health Dr Diane Gashumba said that AFH has been doing a lot to prevent HIV/AIDS increase by providing continuous supports. “AHF has been very productive in terms of delivering different services, including medicines, training, and workshops as well as distributing condoms. Another thing is that they have played a big role in helping the government to reduce the level of infection from parents towards children. It might good if they operate in more than eight districts, but the essential thing is to focus on Rwandan youth so as to know how they can protect themselves as AIDs dangerously impede development”.
Country Program Manager of AHF Rwanda Dr. Brenda Kateera
Dr. Brenda Kateera Country Program Manager of AHF Rwanda, revealed that over 300 thousand get HIV test and 7 thousand among them are infected and are directly linked to facilities.
“We test over three hundred thousand people and only seven thousand of them are HIV positive, we exactly link them with facilities in partnership with government through Global fund and PEPFAR some of our main partners. Our intention is extending our services from 8 to more, although we faced a challenged that funding has been reduced from 51% form our partners, but I am glad that instead of reducing the funding AHF has been increasing the assistance, patients are still getting their care and treatment as they need as we had to cut budget from other support activities that are not urgently needed by patients”.
AHF Rwanda commenced its operations in Rwanda in 2006, and has been collaborating with the government through the Ministry of Health and Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) as part of its global mission to provide cutting edge medicine to people living with HIV, since then, AHF Rwanda has grown from serving two districts to eight districts; supporting twenty health facilities and seven community-based organizations.
AHF Africa Bureau Chief Dr. Penninah Iutung said that AHF will never stop until HIV is over. “We as AHF will never stop fighting against HIV as well as providing different support to make sure that this disease is highly and we really congratulate AHF Rwanda for his great achievement”.
Today AHF Rwanda serves 23,704 patients in it supported sites scattered across Rwanda. In 2016 a total of 356,941 where reached with HIV Testing services. Between 2014 and 2016, 4,775,722 condoms and 54 condom dispensers were distributed for free.
